The name and logo for Three Travelers derives from architect Hiroshi Hara's sculpture/shelter of the same name, facilitated by Roland as part of his Raiding Project. Hara drew his own influence from a stanza of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land:

Who is the third who walks always beside you?
When I count, there are only you and I together
But when I look ahead up the white road
There is always another one walking beside you
Gliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hooded
I do not know whether a man or a woman
—But who is that on the other side of you?

Eliot conjured this image from the written account of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, who experienced the so-called "third man factor" during a strenuous 36-hour trek across the frozen continent. Shackleton, as others in similar grueling situations, gave in to the delusion that an additional person was traveling beside him, providing comfort, support, and direction.

Over the years, our projects have often owed their successes to the unexpected presence or influence of an outsider, a "third man". Call it coincidence or Jungian synchronicity – what eventually brought us here is a series of unexpected human encounters.

Who is the third who walks always beside you?
